Anne has been playing with MYO for 6 years. She started in the second violin section when she was in 7th grade and this year was excited to perform as Concert Mistress. Music is a vibrant part of her life. Anne also played with PYSO, with the Augusta Symphony Orchestra, and sings in the choir at St. Anthony's.
She swam for Deering High School, and then for Westbrook High School swim teams and loves studying Karate at Fournier's. She has volunteered as a Faith Formation teacher and at Mercy Hospital. This year she "graduates" from a homeschooled program with numerous college and AP classes already complete.
She plans to attend the University of Southern Maine next year on a presidential scholarship, majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Music. She would have performed the Mozart Violin Concerto in D-major this Friday at her senior concert with the Maine Youth Orchestra. Her favorite thing about MYO was playing every kind of music - from pop tunes to classical. Her words of advice to upcoming musicians: Work hard, practice often, and you'll be rewarded with a great concert!
"Joey has been a part of MYO for 7 years and will be graduating from Deering High School. He’s played saxophones (soprano, alto, and tenor) in the orchestra as a “utility wind musician” and has also played violin in the orchestra since 6th grade.
Aside from MYO, Joey has participated in many district and state honors music festivals. He was accepted into the MMEA Maine All State Jazz Festival on tenor sax in 2018 (jazz band), 2019 (jazz band), and 2020 (honors jazz band), as well as the MMEA District II Honors Jazz Festival in alto sax in 2014 and tenor sax in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020. He was also accepted in the MMEA District II Honors Instrumental Festival on alto sax in 2015 and tenor sax in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020. Joey played in his school’s band, jazz band, and orchestra. He played in the Cape Elizabeth High School Concert Jazz Band during his junior year, and has also attended the Maine Jazz Camp every summer since 2016.
Outside of music, Joey is an avid runner and is a captain of the Deering High School cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track teams. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the DHS student government and senate. Joey has taken multiple AP classes and university classes at USM. He is a high honors and a top-ten student at Deering. He has also volunteered with the Portland Little League Challenger Division for 5 years.
Joey will be attending Bowdoin College in the fall. He is interested in studying Anthropology and Government & Legal Studies with a concentration in International Relations. Joey plans to join a jazz ensemble at Bowdoin and run cross country and track.
In his 7 years of MYO, Joey has made lasting friendships and has learned a lot from MYO personnel. This spring, he would’ve been performing the solo, “Oblivion” by Astor Piazzolla on soprano saxophone."
MYO will miss these seniors for their musical abilities, for their respect, for their kindness and for their support of those who will build MYO for the future. All of these traits will lead to success in their future and we certainly wish them success and hope they keep playing. We hope they can come back and perform their concertos in a concert after COVID-19.
Best from MYO.
